A Review of the Contech Sprinkler Scarecrow - Keeping Your Garden Safe

If like me you have spent a lot of time, energy and money in keeping your garden in top condition then it is only natural that you will want to protect your plants and water features from damage caused by wildlife, in my case stray herons. There are lots of reasons to avoid chemical deterrents, traps, and electric fences, not least that in our case we have pets and the occasional visit from young nieces and nephews.

This is where the Contech Sprinkler Scarecrow has really come into its own. I have recently installed a new water feature in the garden and stocked it with fish. My delight at seeing an elegant long legged Heron in the garden however rapidly turned to consternation as I saw it reach into the water and emerge with a fairly sizeable koi in its beak. Since then the heron is a frequent fisher and the pond is getting depleted of expensive livestock.

Solutions fell into the bracket of putting netting across the pond, spoiling the vista and perhaps becoming a hazard in its own right, random lengths of fishing line strung across and finally a plastic heron which I later found out can actually attract other herons so I was left with the choice of constantly replacing fish or finding an alternative route.

I finally decided upon a Contech Sprinkler Scarecrow which I had seen in various places. Easy to install, less than 30 minutes after un-boxing the unit I was already seeing results as the neighbors cat was dispatched with a watery jet under its tail. Placed discretely in the shrubs and thus out of view, in the month since the unit was installed I have not lost a further fish to the heron and the cat no longer smugly leaves paw prints and presents all over the car and yard.

With the simple use of the hose and a battery powered motion sensor, salvation has been found. When the ScareCrow detects movement it instantly releases a short but startling burst of water. This sudden spray of water and noise scares animals away. They associate this negative experience with the area and avoid your yard in the future. The motion detector is powerful enough to guard an area up to 1000 square feet with a single sprinkler, more units can be linked in series to guard larger spaces.

I can wholly recommend this as a safe, organic and simple route for dealing with unwanted garden visitors, one caveat however is that it doesn't differentiate between animal and human so remember to switch it off before venturing forth into the garden, or be prepared to get wet!
