I purchased the scarecrow to deter our pet ducks and geese from pooping on our sidewalk and porch, and to keep them from using my wife's herb garden as their salad bar. There's no question this unit works as advertised. This past spring I embarked on a massive landscaping overhaul and noticed that the deer had decided to sample some of my 200 new plants. I live in Morris County NJ on 3 acres of property - we have a lot of deer.

There are similar units, however they require a hose and I was keenly interested in the portability of this unit. I put this unit in a strategic location and could hear it go off in the middle of the night during the summer. It made me smile every time - my plantings surely grinned too.

The jury is out, however, on the battery durability. Towards the fall it seems to have stopped working - but I am heavily wooded and this could be an artifact of very limited direct sun exposure to charge the solar cell. I'll revisit in the spring.

This device works great... when it works at all. I bought one last year and my deer problems vanished. I loved it so much I bought one for my in-laws.

Then the problems started. The one I bought for my in-laws didn't work at all. Since I was an electronics tech, I was able to diagnose the problem: The power switch was broken. I purchased an identical, replacement switch and popped it in. The sensor + ultrasound started working correctly but the water pump did not turn on. It turns out the pump was bad as well. Meanwhile, our unit stopped working. I took it apart and found that the sensor/electronics unit was totally filled with water from our winter rains. The circuit board was completely corroded. The unit has inadequate seals and will not withstand a single winter. I'm not talking snow and sub-zero temperatures here. I'm talking about ordinary, California rain. It's a shame that such a great device could not be built and QCed better.

My stupid neighbors don't obey the leash laws, and let their pets roam free. I was constantly having to clean cat and dog mess from my yard. It was so bad that when I would mow my lawn the tires of the lawnmower would be totally covered in brown matter, if you know what I mean. So I figured I would give the scarecrow a try. Works great, I have on video two dogs going into my yard to do their business, then the scarecrow blasts them point blank in the face with water. It was Hilarious, one of the dogs took off, but the other one panicked and ran around the circles not knowing how to get out of my yard through the fence, even though my gate was wide open. The dogs haven't been in my yard since. I seen cats get blasted with water too. My neighbors are mad though, because their dogs are now messing in their own yard, and every time they walk in their yard they step in it, very funny. One thing that needs to be improved though is battery life, 9 volt batteries have very little capacity and go dead in less than a month if the unit goes off a lot. It would be great if the unit could run on 4 D cells, then the scarecrow could run more than a year on one set of batteries. I bought lithium rechargeable in order to save money, plus they last longer than alkaline 9 volt batteries. Overall great product and a lot of fun to watch it work.

I have a very big problem with deer and rabbits in my area. I tried using sprays and fencing, but after I cut half of my flowers and vegetables grown continuously eat or destroy this spring, I decided to buy Scarecrow motion activated sprinkler . And so far it has done its job beautifully.

Items that came quickly and in good condition, but it must be noted that it is not exactly the same as shown on the image. It is completely black with no signs or yellow sections.

water spray requires a 9 volt battery and a standard garden hose with a regular supply of water. unit with a screw off lid can be removed to tap more daisy chain / water injection unit. It also has a dial to control the sensor sensitivity.

The water injection screw on actual stock plastic units, which must be carefully put into the ground. Because of the stock material, extra care must be made not crack it while driving on the hard earth or stone. There are two clips on the head unit control the level of water injection in which injection will rotate, as well as a diffuser spray to spray to control height. Be prepared to get wet a little fine tuning settings.

The pipes and fittings must be tight lid every week or so to keep the unit from leaking. I feel this is inevitable because the plastic unit has not really made to handle the constant pressure. A side effect continuously on tap, which is standing water in the hose becomes old. As a result, spraying water from this unit is very unpleasant odor. Avoid spray or smell will stick to your skin and clothing.

The water spray to complete the main purpose of keeping it in my garden safe from animals. The fact that it works of four of its stars. However, the build quality and some of the small annoyances listed above keep it from being perfect. Overall, I recommend this product.

I have a large mulch bed with plants and flowers two feet from the woods behind my house. I watched two bucks for about 30 minutes as they grazed in my neighbor's yard and slowly made their way to mine. Eventually Buck1 was three feet from one of the Havahart stakes but never turned from the woods towards the stake. I'm hoping this is because I failed to re-scent the stake after it rained the previous day. I second deer (Buck2) slowly made its way closer to the stake. He went straight for it and received a mild shock. His reaction was to turn and take two large steps away from the stake. He stared at the stake for about 30 seconds then continued to graze, but never came any closer than 10 feet away from the stake. Buck1 did not react when the Buck2 was shocked. In fact, within 2 minutes of Buck2 being shocked Buch1 touched the stake. Unfortunately, he was not shocked because it takes 15 minutes for the stakes to recharge. The deer remained in my yard and even came within a foot of a second Havahart stake, but never touched it. I'm going to do a better job of re-scenting after rainfall and see how it goes.

This product was very easy to install and, so far, has been effective in defending my vegetable garden against all intruders. I mounted it, with tie-wraps, to 10-foot rebar posts that were hammered 2 1/2 ft. in the ground. That left about 6 inches of netting to curve onto the ground. With a few U-shaped pins holding it in place, this seems to have curbed the rabbits and turtles, too. I will add more next season.

Sometimes it is better to try and understand the deer. Deer are basically lazy animals that often use the same trails or paths. Deer also tend to rub on smooth barked trees. Young trees of all species fall into this category. When trees mature and form rougher bark, buck rubbing usually stops, or if it does occur, it does not damage the inner bark.

When positioning the ScareCrow, choose a spot where it can detect animals as they enter the area (and where you can approach it from behind). The ScareCrow is most effective when positioned so animals walk across its field of vision rather than toward the unit. Also, ensure the area you want to protect is within its 105-degree detection area.
Use a high-quality consumer hose with your ScareCrow. Bargain-priced hoses can rupture, allowing water to flow freely.
To automatically limit the times of operation, combine the scarecrow motion sprinkler with a water timer. You can use the water timer to specify the hours you'd like the ScareCrow to be active. Note that with the water off, the ScareCrow sensor will still activate, but does not spray water. For high traffic areas it is best to set the sensitivity knob to zero manually.
Remember, the ScareCrow works best when an animal walks across its field of vision rather than towards the unit.

How the Scarecrow Sprinkler Works

The Scarecrow protects any open area of the garden or yard that receives the unwanted attention of animals. Its sprinkler directs water accurately up to 10 m (35 feet), protecting a 90 square meter (1000 sq. ft.) area. The Scarecrow can see large animals farther away than it can small animals.
The Scarecrow uses a passive infrared sensor to see the temperature difference between an animal and the background. However, if the animal and the background are similar temperatures the Scarecrow will have difficulty detecting movement.When an animal or person moves into the field of view, the scarecrow motion sprinkler notices the change and opens an electronic valve to release a 3 second burst of water through the sprinkler. The Scarecrow then pauses for 8 seconds before resuming sensing. This pause creates an element of randomness and unpredictability preventing animals from becoming used to the device.

Remark; Animals like rabbits, cats and squirrels may cross under the sensor alleys. The motion activated sensor will eventually see them. Larger animals and people are seen the easiest.

To set up the ScareCrow:

Open the battery cover (located under the sensor housing), and install a 9-volt battery.
Check Scarecrow operation. First, turn the sensitivity knob to 4 or 5. Next, wave your hand in front of the sensor lens. You should easily hear the Scarecrow's internal water valve click open, then click closed 3 seconds later. There is an 8 second reset interval after the valve closes when the sensor does not detect motion.
Assemble the stake (with the footrest at the lower end), then attach the sprinkler head and stake to the housing. These fittings should only be hand tightened.
Connect the hose and position the Scarecrow. Aim the Scarecrow towards the area you want to protect. Push the spike into the ground by stepping on the footrest. Do not push on the sensor housing or sprinkler head. If the ground is too hard or otherwise unsuitable for the plastic stake, try placing the Scarecrow in a flowerpot filled with a weighted material like sand or gravel, or you can purchase a ScareCrow mounting bracket.
Turn on the water.

If like me you have spent a lot of time, energy and money in keeping your garden in top condition then it is only natural that you will want to protect your plants and water features from damage caused by wildlife, in my case stray herons. There are lots of reasons to avoid chemical deterrents, traps, and electric fences, not least that in our case we have pets and the occasional visit from young nieces and nephews.

This is where the Contech Sprinkler Scarecrow has really come into its own. I have recently installed a new water feature in the garden and stocked it with fish. My delight at seeing an elegant long legged Heron in the garden however rapidly turned to consternation as I saw it reach into the water and emerge with a fairly sizeable koi in its beak. Since then the heron is a frequent fisher and the pond is getting depleted of expensive livestock.

Solutions fell into the bracket of putting netting across the pond, spoiling the vista and perhaps becoming a hazard in its own right, random lengths of fishing line strung across and finally a plastic heron which I later found out can actually attract other herons so I was left with the choice of constantly replacing fish or finding an alternative route.

I can wholly recommend this as a safe, organic and simple route for dealing with unwanted garden visitors, one caveat however is that it doesn't differentiate between animal and human so remember to switch it off before venturing forth into the garden, or be prepared to get wet!
